Dory and Terry Funk's Flight with Eddie Graham

This story is told on Dory Funk Jr.'s excellent website under the heading, "Gunslinger Stories," which is a collection of short stories written by the former NWA World Champion about the wrestling business.

Again, Eddie had shown up in Miami, having flown his single-engine Cessna in to check the house. And once again Eddie had been drinking, heavily.

This time Eddie asked Dory and Terry Funk to join him on his flight back to Tampa, and the Funk Brothers agreed.

The Funks weren't sure if Eddie was working them or shooting with them on this night. But without question Eddie was flying the plane, and without question Eddie had been drinking.

Dory and Terry watched as the plane approached Tampa, but Eddie didn't head toward the airport to land. Instead he continued flying straight ahead without saying a word.

Soon the plane was headed out over open water, into the darkness.

The Funks looked at each other, knowing there was a limited amount of fuel, not wanting to run out of gas over the water and have to ditch the plane at night.

Dory looked over at Eddie and said something like, "Tampa's back there, Eddie."

Without a word, Eddie turned the plane around and headed straight to the airport to land.

To this day no one knows if Eddie was working the Funks that night, or shooting.
