Jack Brisco Meets the Governor of Texas!

When Jack Brisco was the NWA World Champion, the Funks were trying to get him to come to Amarillo to defend the belt.

But Brisco, wanting to defend the belt in bigger markets for a better payday, had to be convinced to come to Amarillo. 

Dory and Terry Funk hatched the plan to set up a meeting between NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Jack Brisco, and then-Governor of Texas, Dolph Briscoe!

The Funks told Jack that the Governor of Texas wanted to meet him, and that they were distant relatives.

They got one of the friends of Don "The Lawman" Slatton, who was a car salesman, dressed him up and got an old limousine. 

Then they set up this surreptitious meeting between Jack Brisco and his long-lost relative, Governor Dolph Briscoe, on a lonely highway out in West Texas. Well, Jack Brisco fell for it hook, line and sinker! 

Apparently, Brisco had a long conversation with the car-salesman friend of Don Slatton, and really believed he was the Governor of Texas!

The Funks got the NWA World Champion to defend his belt in the Amarillo territory for a week - and got to pull off a great rib at the same time! 

And, as the story goes, Brisco wasn't smartened up to the rib for many months and used to talk in the dressing room about meeting his long-lost relative, the Governor of Texas.

Apparently, Harley Race finally told Brisco the truth one night in the dressing room. Brisco just sat there and hung his head. 

He knew that he had been had by the Funk Brothers!
