Chet Tharpe: In the heat of battle

A chip off the old block

Attorney R. Bruce Tharpe is a "chip off the old block." His father (left) was longtime Hillsborough County, Florida, Fire Chief Chet Tharpe (deceased). The elder Tharpe spent close to 50 years as an active firefighter before his retirement. This is an action shot of Chief Tharpe as he gave orders to his men in the midst of fighting a fire.

Background

Attorney R. Bruce Tharpe has practiced law for over 21 years.

During that time, his Law Firm has dedicated itself to defending those who cannot speak for themselves, whether in complex Federal and State Criminal Defense cases or Plaintiff's Personal Injury Litigation, including Product Liability and Catastrophic Injury/Wrongful Death cases.

South Texas College of Law

Originally from Tampa, Florida, R. Bruce Tharpe attended Chamberlain High School and later attained a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of South Florida in 1983.

He went on to study law at the South Texas College of Law in Houston, where he attained a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree in 1987.

Cameron County District Attorney's Office

After a short time in private practice, Tharpe began his career as a prosecutor with the Cameron County District Attorney's Office in 1989, where he successfully prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases, from DWI to Capital Murder.

It was during this tenure that Tharpe developed excellent trial and jury selection skills, and those abilities serve him and his clients very well today.

Phillips & Akers

In 1984 Tharpe returned to Houston, where he served as General Counsel for a corporation located in the Woodlands, Texas. It was here that he began developing his civil litigation practice.

Tharpe later joined the respected Houston law firm of Phillips & Akers as an associate and was assigned to their Brownsville, Texas office, where he has continued to reside since that time.

During his over three years with Phillips & Akers, Tharpe further developed his skills in civil litigation. After that he opened his own law office, devoting his practice to defending those who are catastrophically injured or killed due to the negligent acts of others, or who find themselves wrongfully charged with criminal offenses.

Florida Roots

Tharpe is the youngest son of ex-Hillsborough County, Florida, Fire Chief Chet Tharpe (deceased), and Doris Lainhardt Tharpe (deceased) of Tampa, Florida. Tharpe's older brother and sister, who he is very proud of, continue to reside in Tampa and are successful professionals in their own fields.

His brother is the Hon. Chet A. Tharpe, a well-respected Florida Circuit Court Judge in Hillsborough County who has held that office since 1990. His sister, Karen (Tharpe) Weber, is a nationally recognized and accredited educator who currently teaches at Brandon High School.

Brownsville, Texas

Tharpe has been married to Ana Luisa (Hernandez) Tharpe for over 12 years. They have two wonderful children: Bruce Allen (age 6) and Lauren Chanel (age 2).

Tharpe's wife, Ani, is an elementary music teacher who attained her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Texas-Brownsville and for eight years hosted her own bilingual children's television program from the Matamoros, Mexico, Televisa affiliate XHAB-TV.

R. Bruce Tharpe has had many clients in Mexico and internationally and is fluent in English and Spanish.
